Marsha "Pay It No Mind" Johnson

Who was Marsha P Johnson?

Who were they?

Marsha P. Johnson was a transgender activist who played a prominent figure in the Stonewall riots and fought for LGBTQ+ rights.

When it came to questions about her gender, she said the "P" in her name stood for "Pay it no mind."

Marsha was also disabled. She used her experiences to help other LGBTQ+ Disabled people and questioned how places could could accommodate those with mental illness.

Marsha P. Johnson is frequently mistaken as the leader of the Stonewall Riots. She wasn't even present when the rioting began, this is something she stated herself. 

They went on record saying they were "simply a gay dude who likes to dress in drag," and she never identified as a woman.

Marsha identified as a "transvestite" not trans.

Legacy

She marched in the first pride parade in New York City as a prominent member of the Gay Liberation Front.

She planned and took part in several protests.

She and her friend, Sylvia Rivera, built the STAR/STAR House, which provided shelter to LGBTQ youth who were homeless.

She was a leader of ACT UP, a grassroots organization dedicated to ending AIDS.
