The Eras of Rap

Old School Rap

Old school hip hop was created around 1978 and continued until about 1984. Old school rap was very authentic, simplistic in theory, and contained less syllables than rap today. Old school mostly consists of party ryhmes and themes of love & sex.

Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five released "The Message". This track portrayed inner city life and trauma within the lyrics.

1983: KDAY Radio

KDAY was the first hip hop radio station. It started as an AM station, but it was losing its popularity until Greg Macmillan, program director, transformed the station's content. In addition to playin hip hop music, Macmillan also allowed DJs to mix on air.

Def Jam was founded in 1984 as the first label focused on hip hop culture.

Golden Age

The Golden Age of rap was an era of influence, innovation, and diversity. The Golden Age lasted from 1985-1992. This era introduced gangstat rap, sociopolitical topics, and a more complex flow.

1986: "Walk This Way"

RUN D.M.C collabed with Areosmith which merged hip hop and rock music. This boosted the popularity of Aerosmith and kept RUN D.M.C at their peak..

1987: "Paid in Full"

With the release of "Paid in Full" by Eric. B & Rakim, a hip hop duo, the team introduced the public to a slow, conversational style of rapping. Eric B. also contributed to shifting to the Golden Age with his beats.

1990: 2 Live Crew

2 Live Crew was arrested while performing in Hollywood, Ca. A judge ruled their album as "obscene". The lyrics the group rapped were provocative and sexually charged, this brought them fame and attention.

1992: L.A. Riots

Many West Coast rappers refer to the Los Angelos riots in their music. The riots were uprisings against police brutality, rappers were politically conscious.

The Move to Mainstream

The Move to Mainstream era impacted hip hop music greatly. Not only did this era include some of the greatest rappers of all time (Tupac, Biggie) and portray a lavish lifestyle, it also shaped American culture.

1993: Snoop Dogg Releases "Doggystyle"

The well- anticipated album, "Doggystyle", was released by Snoop Dogg, signed to Death Row Records.

1995: Queen Latifah Wins A Grammy

Queen Latifah won a Grammy for the track, "U.N.I.T.Y.". The track discussed the disrepect of women in an array of fields, including hip hop.

1996: The Murder of Tupac Shakur

The death of Tupac remains unsolved. His death was untimely and shook the rap community.

1997: The Murder of "Biggie"

The murder of Notorious B.I.G. remains unsolved. Bad Boy Ent. made tracks in his memory.

The New Millennium

The New Millenium era of rap, 2000- 2010, brought a range of content. The style was faster, very complex, and diverse including "southern rap". It took over the popular culture.

2000: The "Soulquarians"

The Soulquarians were a group created by Questlove, J' Dilla, D' Angelo, James Poyser, and other hip hop artists that used the soul & funk style.

Track: "Get Low"

Artist: Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz

"Get Low" introduced crunk into mainstream music. This track also got Atlanta coined as "the center of gravity for hip hop".

2005: Old Kanye

In a 2005 interview, Kanye West goes off script with Mike Myers and says, " George Bush doesn't like black people.

Barack Obama was well supported by many celebrities within the hip hop community.
