Ch 7 Memory

Hook

H.M.

Case Study

  • Of the many abilities that make up what we know as memory, which did H.M. lose and which did he retain?
  • Do you think the surgery that cured H.M. of seizures made his life better?

7.1 Memory classifications & Processes

  • Memory is encoding, storing & retrieving info.

7.1 Memory Classifications & Processes

3 Kinds of Memory

  • Episodic memory- specific event
  • Semantic memory- facts, words & concepts
  • Implicit memory- things that are implied & not clearly state... practiced skills & learned habits

Three Kinds of Memory

Encoding

  • translation of info into a form that can be recalled
  • first stage of processing info
  • visual
  • acoustic
  • Semantic code- info in terms of its meaning

Encoding

Storage

  • maintenance of encoded info
  • 2nd process of memory
  • Maintenance Rehearsal
  • mechanical or rote repitition
  • more time spent on it, longer remebered
  • does not connect info to past learning
  • Elaborative Rehearsal
  • relate to info you already know
  • elaborative rehearsal

Storage

Retrieval

  • locating store info & reurntning it to consious thought
  • 3rd stage of processing info
  • Context Dependent Memory
  • info that is more easily retrieved in the context or situation in which it was stored
  • State Dependent Memory
  • retrieved because the mood in which they were originally enconded

Retrieval

3 Stages of Memory

  • Sensory input
  • Short-term or working memory
  • long-term memory

7.2 Three Stages of Memory

Sensory Memory

  • 1rst stage of info storage
  • consists of immediate, initial recording of data
  • Iconic memory- mental pictures
  • Eidetic imagery- ability to remember visual stimuli over long periods
  • Echoic memory- mental traces of sound

Sensory Memory

Short-term Memory

  • Primacy & Recency Effects
  • Chunking
  • Interference

Short Term Memory

Long-Term Memory

  • 3rd stage of memory capable of large & relatively permanent storage
  • Memory as Reconstruction
  • not recorded & played...reconstructed
  • shape memories according to personal/ individual ways which we view the world
  • remember things in accordance w/our beliefs & needs
  • Schemas
  • mental representations that we form of the world by organizing bits of info into knowledge
  • influence ways we perceive things

Long Term Memory

Forgetting & Memory Improvement

  • recognition, recall & relearning
  • failure of any of these results in forgetting

7.3 Forgetting & Memory Improvement

Forgetting

  • can occur at any of the 3 stages of memory
  • info encoded in sensory memory decays almost immediately
  • short-term memory last 10-12 seconds

Forgetting

Basic Memory Tasks

  • Recognition
  • identifying objects or events that have been encountered before
  • Recall
  • bringing something back to mind
  • you do not immediately recognize something you have come across before
  • you have to "search" for it & possibly reconstruct in your mind
  • Relearning
  • learning something a second time
  • usually in less time than it was originally learned

Basic Memory Tasks

Different Kinds of Forgetting

  • Repression
  • forgetting thing of purpose (painful & unpleasant)
  • Amnesia
  • severe memory loss often caused by trauma to brain
  • retrograde amnesia- events leading up to traumatic event
  • anterograde amnesia- events after trauma
  • Infantile amnesia- before 3 years old

Different Kids of Forgetting

Improving memory

  • Drill & Practice
  • Relate to Existing knowledge
  • Form Unusual Associations
  • Use Mnemonic Device
