At an early age Erdrich was encouraged by her parents to write stories. Her father paid her a nickel a story and her mother made covers for her first books. In high school, Erdrich continued her writing by keeping a journal.

Edrich was encourged at an early age to start writing by he parents. Her father paid her a nickle for each short story she wrote and her mother helped her with book covers. In 1979 Edrich began writing her novel track and poetry.Her thesis the she constructed in college would also later be in one of the most popular books jackwright. Her husband dorris also worked as her agen and helped her with romance novels and helped her edit her novels. As her agent her husband helped her get her book "jackwright" published by henry holt and company. He also convinced her to run for the nelson algren fiction award in 1982 to which she won $5'000.
