Creativity for a Lifetime

The Importance of Environment

Take five minutes:

Reconvene with the teams you worked with on Wednesday. Look back at the blog post that you wrote during class to refresh your memory.

When everyone is ready, talk with the other teams at your table. Compare what you wrote. In what ways were your ideas similar? In what ways different?

Based on your posts, answer the question: how does environment affect creativity? Write or draw your answer on the whiteboard.

". . . according to science "

At your tables:

1. The article last night talked about the importance of "divergent" thinking and "convergent" thinking. How does this relate to the discussions of creative process that we've already had in the class? Which one do you feel like you are personally better at?

2. What do you think of the Picasso quote, "Learn the rules like a pro so you can break the rules like an artist"? Do you think it is generally necessary to "learn the rules" of a given creative field first? Why or why not?

3. The article describes two types of imagination: fantastical imagination and episodic imagination. What is the difference between the two of them? How do they both factor in to leading a creative life?

The Remix

With a partner or group of three . . .

1. Discuss what you created for your remix. What did you make? What sources did you pull from and why? How did you answer the question "who owns creativity"?

2. What similarities and differences are there between your projects? You might think about approach, process and how you answered the question.

3. What are you happy about with what you made? What are you not so satisfied with? Why? How might you keep improving in that area?

Strength and Vulnerability in the Creative Brain
