Introduction

TOPIC 1

SUBTOPIC 1

  • Main Characters: Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry. Takes place in Chicago and NYC.
  • Clare 'passes' as a white woman (when she's black). Irene doesn't pass as white as much as Clare does. Irene begins to dislike Clare because ofhow she lives.

History

SUBTOPIC 2

  • made around the Harlem Renaissance around the 1920s
  • Jim Crow Laws made whites more perferable than blacks. Women also couldn't get the chance to vote.
  • Blacks were searching for their identites through their literature, music, and art.

Diction

TOPIC 2

  • Dialouge is used for ethnic strain, gender roles, and language.
  • Created in Irene's point of view to get her perspective and memories, it allows readers to build a sympathetic relationship with the main character while, taking into account Irene's opinions of the character's and judging them through her eyes.

Symbols (Mask)

Symbols

  • Represents Clare's hidden identity, that she isn't who she really is.
  • Has to look, act, and speak like whites.
  • Uses her mask when her social grace is to obscure for her true feelings.

Doorways, Window, Thresholds

  • Represents the idea of being in two distinct places.
  • Represents the fact that characters find themsleves lost or stuck between their identites.

Important Themes

  • Beauty- you'll see characters admiring one another or wanting to imitate someone else's look. Taking care of their own beauty. Connect beauty with race.
  • Marriage- the strength of marriage is being challenged in the story. With Irene, Clare and Brian. And with Clare and John.

  • Dramatic, outgoing, and willing to take risks.
  • Very admirable, kind, and beautiful at first. But begins to be devious.
  • Becomes more cunning and egotistic throughout the story.
  • Gets what she wants even if it effects others around her poorly.

TOPIC 6

  • Teachings highschoolers about how women would get treated in the 1920s (specific gender roles).
  • Teaching them how racism isn't good for anyone.
  • Teaching them that women need to be treated better than just objects.
