FORESTS

TEMPERATE FORESTS

Temperate forests are those found in the moderate climates between the tropics and boreal regions in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.

TEMPERATE

FORESTS

  • CHARACTERISTICS

characteristics

WEATHER: This biome has four changing seasons including winter, spring, summer, and fall. These seasons happen because of the tilt of the Earth’s axis.Temperate deciduous forests also have quite a wet environment. Following rainforests, temperate deciduous forests are the second-rainiest biome.

Temperature

-30°C to 30°C, yearly average is 10°C, hot summers, cold winters

Precipitation

750 to 1,500 mm of rain per year

Vegetation

Broadleaf trees (oaks, maples, beeches), shrubs, perennial herbs, and mosses

Location

Eastern United States, Canada, Europe, China, and Japan

DOMINANT PLANTS IN TEMPERATE FORESTS

TEMPERATE FORESTS

Trees and plants in deciduous forests have special adaptations to survive in this biome. Deciduous trees are trees which dominate temperate forests. As the seasons change each year, so do the leaves. Each year deciduous trees lose their leaves, and grow them back. In the summer their broad green leaves capture sunlight and help the trees make food through photosynthesis

ANIMALS

ANIMALS

Animals in temperate deciduous forests have to adapt to changing seasons.

The black bear is an animal that is well adapted for the temperate deciduous forest biome

Northwestern Coniferous Forests

Coniferous forests are made up of conifer trees which grow closely together and can withstand immense cold.

Found: Far North and South

BOREAL FORESTS

  • The boreal forest is the world's largest land-based biome. Spreading over continents and covering many countries, the boreal plays a significant role in the planet's biodiversity and even its climate.

  • The biome is known as boreal in Canada, but is also known as taiga, a Russian word.

  • The boreal covers most of inland Canada and Alaska, most of Sweden, Finland and inland Norway, much of Russia, and the northern parts of Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Japan.

  • The boreal represents 29% of the world's forest cover.

BOREAL FORESTS

The word boreal comes from the Greek word for "north", reflecting the fact that boreal forests occur mostly in the Northern Hemisphere.

The word "boreal" might be most familiar because of the phenomenon aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, which is a natural light display seen in high latitudes

Climate in the taiga is cold, with average annual temperatures from about +5° to -5° C
