Blood Relations Reasoning

Blood Relations

If A + B means A is the mother of B; A - B means A is the brother B; A % B means A is the father of B and A x B means A is the sister of B, which of the following shows that P is the maternal uncle of Q?

P - M → P is the brother of M

M + N → M is the mother of N

N x Q → N is the sister of Q

Therefore, P is the maternal uncle of Q.

Example:Introducing a boy, a girl said, "He is the son of the daughter of the father of my uncle." How is the boy related to the girl?

The father of the boy's uncle → the grandfather of the boy and daughter of the grandfather → sister of father.

Example 1:Mr Deepak Mohan walks 5 km towards the south and then turns to the right. After walking 3 km he turns to the left and walks 5 km. What direction is he facing right now?

Directions and Reasoning

Circular Sitting

Circular Sitting arrangement

The kinds:

There can be two ways of seating people in a circle where people are sitting:-

  • facing inwards – towards the center of the circle,
  • facing outward – away from the center of the circle.
  • When facing inwards:
  • Where all the persons to be arranged face the center – then
  • all their ‘rights’ is in the anti-clockwise direction,
  • their ‘lefts’ is in the clockwise direction.
  • When facing outwards:
  • Where all the persons to be arranged face the centre – then
  • i. all their ‘rights’ is in the clockwise direction,
  • ii. their ‘lefts’ is in the anti-clockwise direction.

Bunty, Dev, Manav, Kavya, Payal, Qasturba, Wasir and Himmat are sitting around a circle facing at the centre. Manav is to the immediate right of Bunty who is 4th to the right of Kavya. Payal is 2nd to the left of Bunty and is 4th to the right of Wasir. Qasturba is 2nd to the right of Dev who is 2nd to the right of Himmat.

Q1. Who is 3rd to the right of Bunty?

Q2. Which of the following represents the immediate neighbours of Dev?

Q4. Who is 2nd to the left of Payal?

Q3. Who is 3rd to the right of Wasir?

Q5. Who is to the immediate left of Bunty?

Example

1. Father is four times the age of his daughter. If after 5 years, he would be three times of daughter’s age, then further after 5 years, how many times he would be of his daughter’s age?

Age Problems

Let the daughter's age be x and father's age be 4x.

So as per question, 4x + 5 = 3(x + 5). So x = 10.

Hence present age of daughter is 10 years and present age of father is 40 years.

So after 5 + 5 = 10 years, daughter age would be 20 years and father’s age would be 50 years.

Hence father would be 50/20 = 2.5 times of daughter’s age.

A distribution company provides households to departmental stores within a 50 kilometers radius. The table below shows how far each departmental store is from the godown of the distribution company.

i) How many stores does the distribution company serve? 80

(ii) What is the most common distance of stores from the company’s godown? 21 to 30

(iii) How many stores are 35 km or more from the godown? 36

(iii) What percentage of stores are 31 km or more from the godown?

Read the following carefully and answer the questions following:

Ahmed, Ali, Akbar, Nasir and Shehbaz are students of a college having different heights and weights. Ahmed weighs thrice as much as Ali and Ali 5 times as much as Akbar. Akbar weighs half as much as Nasir and Nasir weighs half as much as Shehbaz.

(i) Who is the heaviest in weight?

(ii) Who is the lightest in weight?

(iii) Shehbaz is lighter in weight than which of the two students?

(iv) Shehbaz is heavier in weight than which of the two students?

(v) Show the descending order of weights of the students.

Let the weight of Shehbaz is x, so that

) Ahmed is the heaviest.

(ii) Akbar is the lightest.

(iii) Shehbaz is lighter in weight than Ahmed and Ali.

(iv) Shehbaz is heavier in weight than Nasir and Akbar.

Five friends Ahmed, Ali, Akbar, Nasir and Shehbaz went on summer vacation to five cities namely V, W, X, Y and Z by five different modes of transportation, that is by bus, train, airplane, car and boat from point A. Akbar went to Y by car and Ali went to X by air. Nasir traveled by boat whereas Shehbaz went by train. For X and W there is no bus service. The person who went to X did not use boat to travel. Now answer the following questions:

(i) How did Ahmed travel and where did he go?

(ii) Which mode of transport was used by the person who traveled to X city?

Solution

In table, the only remaining person and transport are Ahmed and bus. So, Ahmed must be traveled by bus. And, it is also given that there is no bus service to W. Hence, Ahmed must be gone to V or Z. Hence,

(i) Ahmed traveled by bus and went to V or Z.

(ii) It is given that (see table) Ali went to X by airplane.

A told B that C is his father's nephew,D is A s cousin but not brother of C.How is D related to C?

C is A's father nephew so C is A's cousin. Now D is A's cousin but not brother of C which means C is D's sister

Police officers are in pursuit of a stolen vehicle. Officer Baker is directly behind the stolen car. Officer Lopez is behind Baker; Officer O'Malley is behind Lopez. Officer Reinhart is ahead of the stolen car and coming from the opposite direction. Officer Reinhart makes a U-turn and joins the pursuit. He pulls in behind Officer Lopez. Officer Baker pulls up on the driver's side of the stolen vehicle and Officer Lopez pulls up on the other side. Which officer is directly behind the vehicle?

Look at this series: F2, __, D8, C16, B32, What number should fill the blank?

CSS2018

The first component of each term is a letter which is in reverse alphabetical order starting from 'F'. Hence, the next letter will be 'E'. The second component of each term is a number which is increasing by a multiple of 2. Hence, the next number will be 4. Hence, the next term will be 'E4'.

Seven piano students—T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z—are to give a recital, and their instructor is deciding

the order in which they will perform. Each student will play exactly one piece, a piano solo. In

deciding the order of performance, the instructor must observe the following restrictions:

X cannot play first or second.

W cannot play until X has played.

Neither T nor Y can play seventh.

Either Y or Z must play immediately after W plays.

V must play either immediately after or immediately before U plays

If V plays first, which one of the following must be true?

(A) T plays sixth.

(B) X plays third.

(C) Z plays seventh.

(D) T plays immediately after Y.

(E) W plays immediately after X

Mushtaq, Pervaiz, Ahsan, Umair and Saleem are friends having different heights and weights. Mushtaq weighs four times as much as Pervaiz and Pervaiz weighs double than Ahsan. Ahsan weighs half as much as Umair and Umair weighs half as much as Saleem.

(i) Who is the heaviest among five friends? M

(ii) Who is the second heaviest? S

(iii) Who has the lowest weight? A

(iv) Who are equal in weight? U,P

(v) Mention the descending order M>S>U>P>A

CSS 2020

Solution : Mushtaq=M , Pervaiz=P . Ahsan=A Saleem =S, Umair=U

M=4P

P=2A or A= P/2

A=1/2U or U= 2A

U=1/2S or S = 2U

lets assume that weight of pervaiz is 10kg then

M=40kg, A=5kg, U=10kg, S=20kg

A man is now 3times as old as his son.In 10 years time, the sum of their ages will be 76 .How old was the man when his son was born?

CSS 2021

let son's present age = x

man 's present age = 3 x

(x+10)+(3x+10)=76

4x+20=76

4x=76-20

4x=56

x=56/4

x=14

son's present age =14

man's present age= 3*14=42

man's age when his son was born =42-14=28 years
