Structure

MALE:

Penis- the male organ for sexual intercourse

Scrotum- loose pouch-like sac of skin that hangs behind the penis. It contains the testicles

Testicle-responsible for making testosterone- the primary sex hormone

Epididymis- long, coiled tube that rests on the back side of the testicle.

STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION

STRUCTURE

STRUCTURE

The ovary produces the egg cells

The external genitalia consists of the vestibule and its surrounding organs

The uterus holds the baby during the pregnancy

MAJOR FUNCTION

OF THE

REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEMS

The major function of the reproductive system is to ensure survival of the species.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

MALE

produce and deposit sperm

FEMALE

produce egg cells and nourish the fetus until birth

REPRODUCTION

IN

ANIMALS

REPRODUCTION

ASEXUAL

vs.

SEXUAL

ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION

New organism develops from parts of or parts produced by only one parent.

SEXUAL REPRODUCTION

New organism is formed from the union of two sex cells that come from two different parents.

EXTERNAL

vs.

INTERNAL

External REPRODUCTION

Females release egg into the environment to be fertilized by the sperm cells.

Internal REPRODUCTION

Male releases sperm cells into the body of the female through sexual intercourse to fertilize an egg.

DIRECT

vs.

INDIRECT

DEVELOPMENT

Direct REPRODUCTION

When an embryo develops into a mature individual without involving a larval stage.

Internal REPRODUCTION

Involves a sexually immature larval stage, having different food requirements than adults.

SPERM AND EGG PRODUCTION

In both sexes, the hypothalamus monitors and causes the release of hormones from the pituitary gland.

FERTILIZATION

FERTILIZATION

CONTRACEPTIVES

use of devices and practices to avoid conception. They either block the fusion of sperm and eggs or they make the female system hostile to the entrance of the sperm.

INFECTIONS

INFECTIONS

CHLAMYDIA

CHLAMYDIA

is an infection resulted from the Chlamydia trachomitis bacterium, which can infect the urethra (bladder opening) and the cervix.

GONORRHEA

GONORRHEA

sometimes confused with Chlamydia. Usually begins in the urethra and the cervix. However, the bacterium can migrate to the uterus and the fallopian tubes giving rise to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
