Learning the Stage

The 9 Stage Directions

The reason we still say upstage and downstage today is because...

  • The ancient stages were built as a raked or slanted stage and the actors literally walked "up" and "down" the stage.

Stage Blocking and Perspective Review

  • There are 9 stage directions
  • These are the directions the director will use to give you STAGE BLOCKING in a scene.
  • The stage directions of a stage are ALWAYS from the actor's perspective.
  • Once again, if you are the ACTOR ON STAGE, you will use YOUR right or left hand to decide which side of the stage is Stage Left or Right.
