A GMO is an organism that has undergone genomic alteration in order to increase the yield or value of it. Modification can increase resistance to drought, increase shelf life, increase certain nutrients, add chemicals that kill pests, and create an immunity to pesticides and herbicides.
GMOS can be used to grow food in areas that have a harsh climate or poor soil. Without GMOS, some areas would have little fresh produce to eat. GMOS can also help with nutrition. Nutrients essential to human function can be added, such as Beta-Carotene. Beta Carotene is essential to sight, and unfortunetly many people in India were deficient in the vitamin so they started to become blind. The solution to this was Golden Rice, which had increased levels of Beta-Carotene which eventually solved the problem.
Although GMOS have many benefits, there is one major downside: Decreased Genetic Diversity. Often when GMOS are planted they are all exact clones of each other, meaning they all have the same DNA. If all of the DNA is the same, a crop disease could wipe out all of them. If they were organic some would still die, but not all of them.
Overall, GMOS have allowed the human population to grow over 8 Billion people. They do have some consequences, but I think believe mixed use of natural produce and GMOS would be the best possible choice.
