The true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. Doss was drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his life -- without firing a shot -- to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa.
In the movie Doss was said to have met his wife while in the hospital since she was working as a nurse.
To stick to the truth Dorothy did infact work as a nurse but it was many years after the fact. She actually got her nurses degree after Doss was out of the military and could no longer work due to his injuries in battle.

In the movie Doss had missed his wedding due to not being being granted a pass for not using his rifle and was later put in a holding cell.
Contrary to the movie, Doss and Dodrothy really got married on August 14, 1942, before Doss went into active duty.
Many of the actions by Doss's fellow division were true.
Some of the contradictions that are made in the movie were that there was no record of Doss being taken and beaten in his sleep. The Character Smitty, Luke Bracey, was not real but was more of a composit of his tormentors.
Maeda Escarpment, a.k.a. Hacksaw Ridge, is an approximately 350-foot high ridge that runs through most of the island. This island had been occupied by the Japanese many years prior and they ha culltivated many underground tunnles and shafts so they could hid inplain sight.
To asscend and descend the ridge, they did youse cargo nets and Doss was alson one of the three men that volunteered to hang the nets up there.
- When the majority of the men left, Desmond stayed up to aid soliders, like in the movie
- Like in the movie, Desmond lowered the wounded soliders down the side of the ridge one by one
- In the movie, Desmond treated an enemy solider. In a later interview Desmond recalled when he did come across wounded Japanese soliders, but did not help because he was threatened.
