Spanish CIvil War (1936-1939)

Introduction

The Spanish Civil war comenced in 1936 and was fought over political views. One one side,there were the Republicans that favored the second Spanish Republic, and were content with the current Democracy. Fighting against them were the Nationalists, who were a mix of Monarchists, Catholics, Conservatives, and Falangists. The nationalists preffered that a leader have abosolute power, and that the church have immense power. There were many political reasons for this war being fought, and it is often reffered to as the preview of World War II.

When the second republic began, Franco was not happy with the new laws that restricted the church's and the military's power. Because of this disapproval he was sent to a different post far from the capital. It was there that he started the revolution, and led the nationalists to a victory. After the war, Franco became dictator of Spain and ruled until his death in 1975.

Francisco Largo Caballero

Caballero was a leftist, and a socialist who supported the Second Republic, and when the government changed he became Prime Minister of Spain. After a year of the revolution, he was forced to resign after an uprising in Barcelona that provoked a cabinet crisis.

Juan Negrín

Negrín succeeded Caballero as Prime Minister of Spain for the last two years of the revolution. During his short time as Prime Minister, he relied on the communist force of Russia to battle the nationalists, and eventually surrendered to them in 1939. He was later exiled and died in France.

Causes of the war

- When the Second Republic was put in place, the citzens either loved the equal government, or hated it and liked the old monarchy ways.

- Some people took offense and did not support the Catholic church being stripped of its power. This caused civil unrest, and people started to revolt

- A Leftists/communist wins the election and establishes laws that make conservatives mad. Civil unrest begins

-War begins in july of 1936. Russian government gives limited support to conservitives. Italy and Nazi Germany give aid to Nationalists.

- Nationalists win the war in 1939, and Francisco Franco becomes Military dictator

The outcome

After the Republicans surrendered, Francisco Franco became dictator of Spain for the remainder of his life. It was discovered that he imprisoned over 25,000 republicans after the war. Also, he made Catholicism the only tolerated religion in Spain.

Reactions

After the war ended, many Republicans fled the country because of the strict leadership, and there was no longer a freedom of religion. Also, the government established a secret spy network that would spy on citzens, which obviously was not popular.
