Identity

Identity

Each person has their own personal identity depending on their background. No two people are exactly the same.

In my classroom I see that every one of my students has a different perspective to bring to a discussion and that no two students are the same. They each have a have their own identity. Even if they have a similar background what they identify themselves as might be different. Each person is unique.

Understanding Culture

Understanding Culture

Culture is a part of who we are as indivduals. It is more than just what country you or your ancestors are from. It is a make up of your experiences and your background. Including how you communicate and what language you speak. How and where you were raised can affect your culture. Culture is ever changing depending on your experiences and perspectives.

My Culture

Teaching has changed my perspective on other cultures. I have worked with students from many different cultures and it has made me understand others better.

My faith is part of my idenity and helps me to somewhat understand what a minority might feel in certain situations. Religiously I am definetly a minority where I live and have been judge based on that both negatively and positively.

Having a son with a learning disability has taught me to have sympathy for those parents who go through the struggle of admitting something is wrong with their child and being on the other side of an IEP can be very intimidating.

Being a mother has changed my perspective on the world. It is not an easy job and everyone does it a little differently. I feel that I have more sympathy for those who struggle with it because I do. I love my boys but it is one of the hardest jobs I have every had.

My blonde hair is part of my identity now because it has affected who I have become. It has made me more self aware of what I say and do, thinking that I am dumb or I can't do it or it's an excuse for why I can't do it.

Social Awareness

Being socially aware is having the understanding of others and that they have differences. They may not believe what you believe and they may act differently than you but you have the empathy and understanding that their perspective is different.

You respect differences.

When you are socially aware you are being open to others' differences.

Reflection
