Working with sources

Source 1

Today's Objectives:

  • Finish reading/taking notes on Social Media in China/India/Italy sources
  • Practice using a synthesis matrix

Social Media & Intimacy in 3 Cultures

1. Finish reading & annotating your assigned section to yourself. It's ok to skim/speed read, but make sure you're marking what you think are important or interesting ideas/examples

2. Discuss the reading with your group

3. In a google doc (one document for your whole group), take notes on what you decided were some important/provocative ideas - use the questions as a guide

Something to keep in mind:

Even though I've talked about "sorting" your sources into different categories, it is likely that you'll have sources that discuss more than one "theme" or main topic. This is where using a Matrix becomes really useful. Once you've filled it out, you can pretty much just go through each "theme" and draw together each source that comments on in into one (or two) paragraphs of your lit review.

Filling out your own matrix

  • Where to find: BlackBoard > Resources > "Synthesis Matrix"
  • Download as a MS word file and fill out (you can adjust the number of rows and collumns to suit how many sources and "themes"/main ideas you are working with at this point
  • It's a good idea to re-state your research question, since I imagine it has changed somewhat since the first time you wrote one
