sliding filament theory of contraction

step 5 and 6

Amazing Grasle

Anatomy and Physiology

phase one!!

Calcium ions are released by sarcoplasmic reticulum into the sarcoplasm.

Step 1

break down

Step 2

When ATP breaks down it releases energy, releasing the head of the myosin.

visual representation of breakdown

calcium ion bond

Calcium ions bind to troponin, exposing the binding site on the actin filament.

step 3 and 4

visual

myosin attaches

To form a cross bridge the head of the myosin attaches to the exposed binding actin.

NEXT STEPS

When the cross bridge flexes it pulls the actin filament towards the center of the sarcomere.

Step 2

on the myosin head the APT binding site is reattached to the molecule.

step 7

The binding site is covered up agin when the actin is released from the myosin head.

The cycle can continue with calcium ions present and ap moluces in place on the myosin head.
