Destination 1: New York, USA

9/11 (nine-eleven) terrorist attack

9/11 (nine-eleven) terrorist attack

In most of the world, people write the date as day-month-year (today is 04/05/2017).

America, people write the day as month-day-year (today is 05/04/2017).

It was a terrorist attack. The planes were in control of terrorists. 2996 people died, and more than 6000 were hurt.

On 9/11/2001, the 11th of September, two planes crashed into the twin towers in New York.

What happened afterwards

They invaded Afghanistan in December, and Iraq two years later, starting two wars.

What happened afterwards

After 9/11, the USA became very strict with airport security.

9/11 is also the reason why so many people treat Muslims like terrorists.

Visiting Ground Zero

Today, the place where 9/11 happened is called Ground Zero.

Visiting Ground Zero

Many people visit Ground Zero, to pay respect to the people who died there.

It is a very sad place, but people think it is important to show what happened there.

Destination 2: Chernobyl, Ukraine

The Chernobyl Disaster

The Chernobyl Disaster

On the 24th of April 1986, a nuclear reactor exploded in Chernobyl, Ukraine.

It was a disaster.

53 people died on that day but...

More than 60,000 people have died because of cancer from the radioactive explosion.

Chernobyl Now

Now nobody lives in Chernobyl anymore. It is still too dangerous. If you breathe the air there, you could get poisoned.

Chernobyl Now

Many animals still live there, even wolves and bears, because people do not hunt them.

Visiting Chernobyl

Even though some people think it is still too dangerous, you can take a tour in Chernobyl for a day.

Visiting Chernobyl

People go there to see what happens when a disaster makes people leave a place. It also shows how nature can come back to a human city.

Destination 3: Yamanashi, Japan

Aokigahara: Japan's "Sea of Trees"

People who do not follow the paths in the forest are often lost forever.

Aokigahara is also known as Jukai, "The Sea of Trees". It is a forest near Mt Fuji, Japan's tallest mountain.

It is 30 km squared - almost as big as Kowloon.

The Suicide Forest

There are signs in the forest telling people to turn around.

Aokigahara is the most popular place in Japan for suicide.

In 2010, more than 200 people tried to kill themselves there.

How People Help

Every year, people volunteer to go into the forest to find people. In 2010, 247 people tried to kill themselves - but 193 were stopped.

How People Help

Dark Tourism in Aokigahara
