My JOB SHADOW

Experience

A Day with Fr. Stephen Durkee

By Jeffrey Davlin

First Take

FIRST TAKE

I arrived at Fr. Durkee's parish at about 7:30 AM. He had already been up for an hour in adoration. Then we began with...

MASS

MASS

I served Mass for Fr. Durkee at 8:15. I loved the fact that the day started this way, and felt like it really started the day off right.

After Mass, Father spent time visiting with his parishioners and staff members. The easy friendship was inspiring.

FUNERAL MEETING

FUNERAL MEETING

Then, Father met with a family who had just lost a Dad/Husband and was having a funeral soon. Father asked the family to talk through their best memories of their deceased family member as he took note for his homily. I remember thinking how therapeutic it must be for the family.

AFTER LUNCH

After a delicious lunch at a Mexican restaurant, I was treated to a 3-hour budget meeting... Yay!

Fr.Stephen and the other priest of the parish went over every detail of how the parish's money was being spent in order to determine the next year's budget.

Then, Fr. Stephen met with a young man (older than me) who is interested in the priesthood, to get him the diocesan application.

A SURPRISE + A GOODBYE

SURPRISE + CONCLUSION

During lunch, Fr. Durkee had gotten a call asking him to come to the children's hospital to pray over a sick child. We visited, comforted, and prayed with the family for their little girl.

Fr. Stephen still had some meetings later that evening, but I was going to be late for dinner, so I went home after the hospital visit!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As I reflect over my day with Fr. Stephen Durkee, I am struck by how beautiful the life of a priest is. My job shadow experience has supported my desire to share in Christ's priesthood and feed his lambs.
