Reading short stories

"with twisted endings"

F

The students have read short stories and would like to share them with you. Here are the synopsis they have written together with their comments.

E

Synopsis

After having sacked his colleague, a scientist remains alone on an island with Barney, a laboratory rat. A few scientific tests later the little rat seems to be developing some form of intelligence.

Beware the intelligent rat !

"Barney"

Will Stanton

Readers : Elie C., Maxime M. and Théa B.

Our readers' comments

Elie

The author has written about a subject which has been used so often : the danger of scientific experiments about intelligence. But this story was really surprising from the start to the end.

Maxime

This short story was a little bit difficult at first but soon I felt very eager to know the end and I discovered a totally unexpected ending. I recommend this short story to everyone who likes the unexpected, they will love it!

Théa

At first the story seemed a bit boring but while I was reading I started feeling like Sherlock Holmes, looking for some hints to understand the end. I think that the end is so unexpected that you will say : “Oh my god!”

If the synopsis and the comments were a tempting start, then read the story.

D

Synopsis

Imagine you have a pathological fear of being late and your husband is only making it worse by taking his time and playing with your fear. Well this is the story of Mrs Foster. It all begins with a simple trip to Paris to visit her daughter…

"The Way Up To Heaven"

Roald Dahl (1954)

Readers : Léa D., Jennifer L. and Hanna V.

Our readers' comments

Léa D.

A brilliant story with many hints you can only see and understand once you have read the last line.

Jennifer L.

This story is quite good but you must read it to the end to understand.

Hanna V.

Good story, very smart. Read until the end to understand.

If the synopsis and the comments were a tempting start, then read the story.

C

Synopsis

This is not an ordinary short story, suspense is the rhythm of the plot. Every details have capital importance. Will you be able to see them? You will never be ready for the end…

"Do I Tell Her ?"

Steven L. Peck (2012)

Readers : Alexia J., Elisa C., Emma P. and Mathilde R.

Our readers' comments

Alexia J.

When I started reading I thought it was a classic story. But as I was reading on I noticed some details that I had not seen at first. The end came as a surprise.

Elisa C.

I liked reading that short story because at the beginning I did not understand what would happen in the end. It was interesting and surprising and there was suspense.

Emma P.

I loved this short story because I am keen on science fiction. It is very interesting because it makes us think about our future : is cloning people possible? We can ask ourselves many questions related to the ethics and I think the reader does feel implicated. And there is suspense until the end.

Mathilde R.

I really liked reading this science fiction short story. Until the end we do not know what is going to happen, there is suspense and the end was breathtaking. I still cannot believe it! I am really impressed.

If the synopsis and the comments were a tempting start, then read the story.

"Wish you were here"

Frank Jones

Synopsis

Readers : Adrien L., Amandine H. and Arnaud V.

Dorothy, an old woman, buys a gnome. She places it in her garden in a beautiful place. But one morning when she wakes up the gnome has fallen off, probably because of some children. The next day the gnome has fallen again. That is very strange… Norman the nice postman reassures Dorothy. But a few days later the gnome disappears! As usual Norman comes round with the mail, but this time with a post-card. Who is it from? That is another mystery...

Our reader's comments

Arnaud V.

I really liked this story because until the end you don’t really understand what is happening and when you finish reading you realise that there were many hints and you did not see anything.

If the synopsis and the comments were a tempting start, then read the story.

What will happen?

"The Last Leaf"

O. Henry (1907)

Readers : Emma S., Léana C., Marie B. and Mervé Y.

Our readers' comments

Emma S.

I enjoyed reading this story. It was fascinating to see the skill with which O. Henry tells his story and reveals the surprising ending. I would highly recommend this short story to a friend.

Léana C.

I liked this story a lot because it is both sad, beautiful and poetic. The ending is surprising of course and it differs from most stories we can read.

Marie B.

This story was really surprising. I really liked it because it seemed very simple at first sight but the end was really unexpected.

Mervé Y.

I did not really like this story because it is sad and unrealistic. The atmosphere is cold and it made me feel anxious. It is very different from what I am used to read.

If the synopsis and the comments were a tempting start, then read the story.
