Appeal to Fear Fallacy

Courtney Scallin

Definition

when people use fear as the main motivator in order to get them to believe and follow their idea

Visual

Legalizing Marijuana

My example

If you legalize marijuana, kids will feel its okay to throw their lives away to drugs

Why this is a fallacy

This is a fallacy because

1) Marijuana doesn't appeal to everyone

2) For a good amount of people, it is prescribed to help with sleeping

3) It has been known to provide benefits to the user

1). If you don't go to college you'll end up working at McDonalds

2). If you don't go to church, you'll burn in Hell

Other examples

The first one is a fallacy because it makes it sound as though you cant do anything with your life unless you go to college, when in fact there are a lot more things to do.

College

The second one is a fallacy because it is projecting a belief that one may not follow in hopes of scaring them into believing.

Church
