Billie Holiday

Who's that about?

Smoke and Flowers

Smoke and Flowers

1915 - 1959

Why Billie Holiday?

Billie Holiday

Jerry Dantzic was taking some pictures at April, 1957. This is one of them.

The main idea was to make a totally biographical introduction, but Zadie couldn't find the right tone.

The last 70 cents.

¢ 70

On the last days of her life, Billie was interned and in the meanwhile, a big amount of drugs were found on her clothes.

She spent the last day of her life at the prison, being robbed by her business partner.

When she died, were left only 70 cents on her bank account.

Zadie Smith becomes Billie Holiday.

DIVING DEEPER

Without the right tone, Zadie Smith starts to write as Billie Holiday through her eyes.

How it begins?

The story, as most of the readers assume, takes place on the last days of Holiday's life.

The actual S. Z.

Most of read took this impressions through the part, that's just at the begining:

"you certainly don’t go out anyplace less than dressed, not these days."

In this part, she's saying good-bye to all her identities (Eleanora Fragan and Billie), now she's the Lady Day.

"Lady Day"

Lady Day is who perform this short story. It's the last days of her life, and Billie just want to be herself.

Lady Day

Lady Day is her performance as a Man's Lady, the one who doesn't likes other women.

As a man's lady, all her best friends are men. They understand her, and knew she was Lady Day even before her.

Title

Why Lady Day acts?

t’s not that you don’t like other women, exactly, it’s only that you’re wary. And they’re wary of you right back. No surprise, really. Most of these girls live in a completely different world.

"It’s not that you don’t like other women, exactly, it’s only that you’re wary. And they’re wary of you right back. No surprise, really. Most of these girls live in a completely different world."

Pepi.

As her friends suggestion, she gets herself a dog, Pepi.

Pepi

Pepi's not her first dog, but her only friend now.

"(...) dogs are too good for the world", she said.

Her Music.

As a reflection, that hadn't a starting point or and, the part X (3rd) is a reflection about her music and also the singer life.

The Music

How everyone saw her like a jukebox, just ordering song from their tables.

"Nobody want to hear about you, but how you are in your songs. They never want to know about the surprise you feel in yourself, the sense of being directed by God, (...)"

That's all Folks!
