What is

plagiarism?

What is plagiarism?

Ms.Stephens assigns you a research paper that you need to look up sources for in the library or on the internet. You find the perfect source with all the perfect information, YAY! But, how do you use the information correctly in your research paper? You cannot just simply copy & paste the information you found into your paper, this would be called plagiarism! "According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, to "plagiarize" means:

  • to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
  • to use (another's production) without crediting the source
  • to commit literary theft
  • to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source" (https://www.plagiarism.org/article/what-is-plagiarism, 2022)

Do you see this here? This is where Ms.Stephens is giving the original author credit for this definition!

Now what?

Now that you know what plagiarism is, how can you avoid committing plagiarism even if you didn't mean to do it? It's quite simple actually! Just like Ms. Stephens did, if you find a perfect source for your topic you would put an " (open quotation), then the information from your source, then " (close quotation), finally you would say where you found this information. Mine came from a website so I simply told you which website it came from & the year I retrieved it from that website! Simple as that! If you are sourcing from an outside source at the end of your paper you will include a references page for a more detailed version of where you found this information!

Consequences of Plagiarism

If you are found to be plagiarizing you will fail the assignment, you will not have the chance to redo the assignment either. If this is your 1st offense that will be it but if it is found to be your 2nd or later chance you will face consequences from administration & even suspension or expulsion! I know you are not going to do this because it is so simple to tell me where the information came from! Let's explore our final topic, a reference page! Then you will all be some of the best writers around!

This is what we're not going to do!

Here is a great example of a reference page or works cited is what it can also be called!

Reference Page

So you've written your paper & given me your sources in the paper but now it's time to wrap it all up for Ms. Stephens! The reference page should be your last page separate from the paper itself, if you cited it in your paper it MUST be on the reference page, and it must be in alphabetical order! Below is another example from APAformat.com that is a close up example of what EACH reference should look like!
