Mass Research

Sophie Levenson

The Scientists

Lavoisier

Antoine Lavoisier

  • Lived from 1743-1794
  • Named elements; carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, and discovered the compound of water
  • In 1771 (at age 28), he married Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze, who was only 13!
  • In 1778, discovered the law of conservation of mass. How mass is conserved in chemical reactions (equality in products and reactants in chemical reactions

Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton 1643-1727

  • Extremely interested in alchemy
  • Developed the Two New Sciences which corrected Aristotle's misconceptions of physics.
  • In 1655, discovered Calculus, gravity, optics, and the behavior of light.
  • Found sunlight is made of colors of the rainbow
  • Wrote the Principia, a detailed description of gravity and motion
  • Law of gravitational motion-how there is a gravity pulling on the moon as it orbits the earth.
  • First Law; An object stays at rest unless acted upon by another force
  • Second Law; F=ma
  • Third Law; When an object exerts a force on a second object, the same force will be pushed back into the first object.

Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein

  • General Theory of Relativity; gravity and acceleration are identical. Leading into the theory of gravity being the same as geometery, bending of light (blackholes)
  • Anti-gravitational force= "cosmoslogical constant"
  • mass-energy equivilence
  • E=mc^2; tiny amounts of mass can be converted into a large amount of energy
  • photoelectric effect
  • quantum theory

a) The mass of a body is a measure of the quantity of matter in it.

b) The mass of a body is its resistance to a change in motion.

c) The mass of a body depends on its change in velocity.

Scientific Statements

a) The mass of a body is a measure of the quantity of matter in it.

This was said by Lavoisier because of his discovery of the conservation of mass. This is judged by how much mass is within a product to determine the amount of matter in the reactant.

b) The mass of a body is its resistance to a change in motion.

This was said by Sir Isaac Newton because it mirrors his first law of motion. Which is a body at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an external force. This also has to do with inertia, and how a body only changes when a force to causes it to do so.

c) The mass of a body depends on its change in velocity.

Einstein's equation E=mc^2 represents his theory of mass-energy equivilance. C indicates the velocity, for it is the speed of light and is multiplied by the mass of the body.
