"Shrinking Women" - Lily Myers

"Shrinking Women"

Lily Myers

Across from me at the kitchen table, my mother smiles over red wine that she drinks out of a measuring glass.

She says she doesn't deprive herself,

but I've learned to find nuance in every movement of her fork.

In every crinkle in her brow as she offers me the uneaten pieces on her plate.

I've realized she only eats dinner when I suggest it.

I wonder what she does when I'm not there to do so.

Muscle is created by repeatedly lifting things that have been

designed to weigh us down. So when your shoulders feel heavy,

stand up straight and lift your chin – call it exercise. When the

world crumbles around you, you have to look at the wreckage and

then build a new one out of the pieces that are still here.

I'm starting with the man in the mirror

I'm asking him to change his ways

And no message could have been any clearer

If you want to make the world a better place

Take a look at yourself, and then make a change

Would you turn the other cheek?

Speeches

"Pursuit of Happyness"

Pursuit of Happyness

Don’t ever let somebody tell you you can’t do something. Not even me, alright? You got a dream? You gotta protect it.

Remember the Titans

If we don't come together, right now, on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed -- just like they were.

I don't care if you like each other or not. But you will respect each other. And maybe -- I don't know -- maybe we'll learn to play this game like men.

Kobe Bryant

“...the Mamba mentality simply means trying to be the best version of yourself. That’s what the mentality means. It means every day you know you’re trying to become better, and it’s a constant quest. It’s an infinite quest...”

How to Overcome Apathy and Find Your Power - Dolores Huerta

How to Overcome Apathy and Find Your Power

by Dolores Huerta

With her signature wit and humor, Huerta reflects on her life's work, offering inspiration for anybody trying to overcome apathy, get involved and find their own power.

What Can We Learn from College Athletes? - Kendall Spenser

What Can We Learn from College Athletes

by Kendall Spenser

What do you envision when you hear the word 'student-athlete'? Law student and long-jump champion Kendall Spencer suspects that the average response to that question might not do student-athletes justice. Having been told--like many other athletes--to stick to what he's good at, Spencer uses this inspirational talk to argue that college sports can be used as a platform to empower and inspire.

My Philosophy for a Happy Life - Sam Burns

My Philosophy for a Happy Life

by Sam Burns

Born with a rare genetic disorder called progeria, Sam Berns knew he'd be facing more obstacles in life than most. This didn't stop him from taking charge of his own happiness. In this moving and inspirational talk, Berns lays out the three principles of the personal philosophy that allowed him to do so.

Give

by Simon Armitage

Of all the public places, dear

to make a scene, I’ve chosen here.

Of all the doorways in the world

to choose to sleep, I’ve chosen yours.

I’m on the street, under the stars.

For coppers I can dance or sing.

For silver-swallow swords, eat fire.

For gold-escape from locks and chains.

It’s not as if I’m holding out

for frankincense or myrrh, just change.

You give me tea. That’s big of you.

I’m on my knees. I beg of you.

Still I Rise

- Maya Angelou

Still I Rise

by Maya Angelou

You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?

Does it come as a surprise

That I dance like I've got diamonds

At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame

I rise

Up from a past that’s rooted in pain

I rise

I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,

Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

I rise

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear

I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave.

I rise

I rise

I rise.

You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?

Why are you beset with gloom?

’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells

Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,

With the certainty of tides,

Just like hopes springing high,

Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?

Bowed head and lowered eyes?

Shoulders falling down like teardrops,

Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?

Don't you take it awful hard

’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines

Diggin’ in my own backyard.

Oh The Places You'll Go

- Dr. Seuss

Oh The Places You'll Go

by Dr. Seuss

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…”

To Kill a Mockingbird

by Harper Lee

“Atticus said to Jem one day, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it. “Your father’s right,” she said. “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing except make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corn cribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
