Did you all ever wonder why does the leap year always comes in February and once in 4 years?
To reveal this mystery, we have to go back to earth's rotation and revolution.
Did you know earth takes 365.25 days to complete one revolution which is called a year! However, we round it up to 365 days in a year and leave the 0.25 times of the day, but these 6 hours of the day don't disappear.
So mathematically if you calculate. 0.25, if calculated according to fraction, is 1/4. So if we add 4 quarters it makes a complete 1.
As a result of this math, we have 366 days every four years to balance the 0.25 days left every year.
2020 is a leap year because we subtracted that 6 hours of the day from 2017, 2018,2019.
NASA states "leap year is important to keep up with the solar system." As subtracting 5hrs 46 mins 48 seconds would not make a big difference is taken from one year. But could make a huge difference in the time of hundreds of years.
As an example stated by NASA July comes in summer in most of the countries except India. Eventually, July would come in winter if leap years were absent from the calender.
Now you must be thinking why only in February? According to the Gregorian calendar, February is the only month having 28 days due to greek mythology. Therefore to balance that one single day we have 29 days in February.
Thought how unlucky the kids are whose birthdays come on the 29th of February!
This formed the rhythm of "Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November; all the rest of thirty-one except February alone."
For your amaze, some planets have more leap years than regular years! Like our neighbor, the planet Mars has 6 leaps years in 10 years.
