Transmedia

F

What is it?

Marsha Kinder (1991) refers to transmedia as "a set of narrative and nonnarrative media elements that are spread systematically across multiple platforms."

Transmedia creates experiences through digital, textual, visual, and media elements. It can also be used to improve an indiviuals social and cultural skills. (Alper, Herr-Stephenson, 2013).

What is an example of transmedia?

The company marvel comics originally started out just producing comic books. This company then started becoming so popular that they decided to release movies and tv shows that are now known to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When these movies also became popular, they then branched out the experience into various other transmedia platforms, such as collectables, games and fan fiction.

Transmedia Play

What is Transmedia Play?

Transmedia Play is the way that children interect and experiment with media platforms, and how they express themselves through these methods. (Alper, Herr-Stephenson, 2013).

There are 3 core principles to take into cosideration when helping a child discover transmedia play. These are:

- Play Partners

- Places to Play

- Paradigm-shifting Play

(Herr-Stephenson; Alper; Reilly; Jenkins, 2013)

(Fleming, 2013).

Play Partners

This is the relationship developed by the teacher, which will either make transmedia play a positive experience or a negative experience for the child.

Because transmedia play is vital for children to participate in, the teacher must ensure that they develop a good relationship with the child. (3p Learning, n.d.)

Play Partners

Places to Play

This core principle revolves around the places in the real world where children explore transmedia play. But it also refers to places within the "transmedia universe". ((Herr-Stephenson; Alper; Reilly; Jenkins, 2013). This means that the child will be affected differently, depending on where the transmedia play takes them, and what sort of story and message it is giving them.

Paradigm-shifting Play

Changing the routines and way the child used to think, to better enhance their learning experience using transmedia play.
