  • Joe Sherrod (her father) was a sharecropper
  • Born in Bells in 1932
  • Went to Memphis State and then became a teacher

Samuel Thomas Lewis

(my grandfather)

Lewis's

  • Born in Bells, TN in 1930
  • Vanderbuilt and Rhodes College
  • Hunted when he was younger
  • enlisted in the army - Ft. Bliss, TX in 1958-1960
  • His father bought the Bank of Crockett in the early 1900's
  • Became president of the Bank of Crockett

John Wesley "Sonny" Butler Sr.

Butlers

  • Butlers first came into the country in the 1780's
  • Born in a small town in Brooks County, Georgia
  • served in the Signal Corps in Germany, reconstructing west Germany's phone lines after WWII during Korean War (1951)
  • moved to Floirda for aerospace work in the Apollo Program after his service
  • retired and went back to farming with his family in Georgia

Martha Mitchell

Mitchells

  • orginally from Scotland and England, came to North Carolina and Virginia in 1640
  • born in Thomasville, Georgia
  • met my grandfather while she was working concessions at a local movie theater in Georgia (after he came back from service)

  • Born and raised in Memphis
  • attended PDS (JK-6th)
  • Older brother, Wesley, at Colorado School of Mines
  • Christian, raised Presbyterian
  • Eagle Scout
  • worked this past summer near my grandparents house

Purpose Motive Principle

Purpose: attend SMU, find a career in business, have a family

Motive: make my family proud, take advantage of the oppertunities granted to me (especially those granted by way of sacrifice)
