Important Event
In 1887 something at the time was a massive shock to the people of Australia and Great Britain, Alfred Deakin refused to be knighted by the Queen. At the time it was Queen Alexandrina Victoria. It seems that his refusal of a knighthood was due to a combination of humility. This is not the only honours that Alfred Deakin would turn down, in his very long politics corer of 39 years in politics. Australians continued to be knighted until 1983. Which was a big deal among the people of Australia, they were wondering if Australia was going to leave the commonwealth.
