"Encanto" is a Walt Disney Animation Studios fantasy tale produced by Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino. Byron Howard, Jared Bush, and Charise Castro Smith are the directors of the film "Encanto".
The idea of Encanto originated from producer Clark Spencer's grandparents. Similarly to the film Encanto, after Spenser's grandfather died, her grandmother believed that her husband's soul was within a candlelight to care for the family. The directors of the film, Byron Howard, Jared Bush, and Charise Castro Smith developed the different aspect of the characters in Encanto, such as their powers or personality traits.
Maribel is a member of the Madrigal family. Unlike the rest of her family, Maribel did not receive a magical power during her 5th birthday; thus, Maribel tends to be insecure. However, Maribel reveals her bravery and persistance when she devotes herself to save Madrigal's home after the magical house cracks. Despite not having a magical power, she becomes the last source of hope for the Madrigal family when the danger of encanto is in danger.
Alma Madrigal is the head of the MAdrigal family and the mother of Bruno, Julieta, and Pepa. Abuela Alma became a widow after her husband, Pedro Madrigal, was murdered by a group of soldiers; thus, abuela Alma raised her family by herself. As Alma witnessed the tragic murder of her husband, a miracle occured that caused the candle to become magical; it was Pedro's love for his family that caused the miracle to happen. Although Abuela Alma has no magical powers, she is in charge of keeping the magical powers safe as she protects the magical candle.
Antonio is the youngest member of the madrigal family; he is a 5-year old boy and the ceremony to receive his power was the first since Maribel's ceremony. During his ceremony, Antonio received the power to communicate with animals. Since the beginning of the film, Antonio portrays a very introverted personality. Since his ceremory occured after Maribel's ceremony, Antonio was afraid to not receive a power; thus, he was often shy and disliked crowds and is insecure.
As Alma Madrigal witnessed the murder of her husband, a miracle occurred; the love of Alma's husband caused a candle to become magical. The magical candle gifted every children in the madrigal household with special powers and created a magical house, la casita, for the madrigal family to live hidden in the mountains of Colombia. Although the candle is the fuel of the powers, la casita represents the living soul of abuelo Pablo, Alma's deceased husband. However, the magical powers of la casita and the candle are in great danger, and the house crumbles down protecting Maribel. Although Maribel was the only child in the family that did not receive magical powers, her bravery and perseverance was the last source of hope to save the Madrigal family.
As defined in the Merriam Webster Dictionary, magical realism is a literary style commonly used in Latin America, that "incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into otherwise realistic fiction" (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). In other words, Magical realism is a form of writing that merges magical elements and realistic fiction.
A form of Magical realism is the jumping of realistic elements to surrealistic events. This is portrayed in Encanto's song "Surface Pressure," through Luisa's point of view. In the film, the donkeys are playing the violin while Luisa and her younger sister, Mirabel, are levitating through the cotton candy clouds.
The style of writing in magical realism often lacks a narration of the story; therefore, the authors do not explain how some events came to be, and the audience is to interpret these events. In Encanto, since there is no narration, the audience does not know who created the candle or the exact reason why the candle is magical.
Magical Realism is often utilized by authors to portray their political criticism. In the film Encanto, Abuelo Pablo is murdered by a group of soldiers while he was escaping with his wife, Alma, and their triplets. This event mirrors the political issues faced by Colombian families during the 1900s, when they were forced to leave their homes due to paramilitary invasion of the needy and indigenous communities of Colombia.
Some authors utlize magical realism to portray themes with a deeper meaning. In the film Encanto, la casita crumbles down as the Madrigal family faces struggles and suffering. La casita crumbling apart represents trauma among families as they face hardships. Families often fall apart as the struggles among different generations collide together; thus, families stay distant from one another.
