What is UNESCO?

Introduction

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a specialised agency of the United Nations.

Promote world peace and security through international cooperation in education, arts, sciences and culture.

The Preamble to the Constitution of UNESCO declares that "since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed".

Furthermore, Article 1 of ICCPR 1976, with the UDHR 1948, also recognizes the right of all people to pursue their cultural, economic, and social goals alongside determining their political status.

Pakistan's Context

As a specialized UN agency, UNESCO has been operating in Pakistan since 1958.

The Government of Pakistan recognizes UNESCO as a "long-term strategic partner" in support of achieving Pakistan’s national development plans and priorities.

UNESCO's mission is to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development, and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information.
