Irish war of independence
The Irish War of Independence was a war that started after WW1. The war was a constant back and forth between the British and Irish groups that wanted independence.
the war started in 1919 and ended in 1921
The reason why I think the Irish got their independence was because the British didn't want to keep fighting and the Irish refused to stop.
Dublin
Westminster
London
Limerick
Ulster
Belfast
There was a lot of groups involved, but each group had an effect on Irish independence.
British- prevent the Irish from having Independence
RIC(Royal Irish Constabulary)-British police in Ireland
Black and Tans- special forces for the RIC
Auxiliary Division-special forces of the RIC
G Men- spies for the British, came from the Dublin police force,
Cairo Gang- spies for the British after the G Men failed
The British were like the nobles and the nobles army
IRA(Irish volunteers)-fight for independence, dealt with the fighting and some of the political things
Sinn Fein(we ourselves)- wanted independence, dealt with the political side of the war
Ulster Volunteers-Northern Ireland, didn't want Independence
Squad-find and kill G Men and Cairo gang members
Limerick Soviets- like the Soviets in Russia, the Irish and the British both attacked them but they kept coming back and failed each time
Most the Irish was like the lower class in the French Revolution, the Ulster volunteers are like the the royal troops and the Sinn Fein is like the Third Estate
The Solo-Head Ambush and Easter Rising are what started the war, but for the Irish people, what started the war, was their want for independence after the Potato Famine. It killed half of the Irish people. Some Irish people went to the new world. (the Irish have been under England's rule ever since the Anglo Saxons/Celts time)
This didn't start war but it is important because this could have stared the war if ww1didnt start.
During 1916 the Irish volunteers that didn't leave to go fight in ww1 took over Dublin and as soon the volunteers took control over the city they were shelled by the British the fight lasted 6 days. On the day 6 of fighting the volunteers surrendered and the leaders were killed.
More people supported the idea of independence.
People thought sinn fein was behind easter rising and that caused volunteers to start joining the sinn fein to make there veiws align with the volunteers.
Irish volunteers ambushed RIC policemen killing two and stealing gelignite. This started the war and RIC barracks being destroyed and looted by the volunteers.
The Solohead Ambush is like the storming of Bastille when French peasants killed a French governor.
There was not a lot of ways the war was going to stop because neither side was willing to give up. The British split Ireland into two: Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland, but the Sinn Fein didn't take their seats in the British Parliament. If Sinn Fein took their seats it could have ended the war.
The king locked out the Third Estate from voting on something that could have stop the war
Constance Marovik (first woman elected to the british parliament) and the rest of the Sinn Fein didn't want to go Westminster instead they had made their own parliament called Dahl Eireann(Assembly of Ireland).
The Sinn Fein were boycotting England.
After years of fighting King George, the fifth called for peace without knowing how weak the IRA. None of the British didn't know how close they were from winning.
The day for the peace treaty was supposed to be signed IRA troops killed two policemen during a RIC raid in Belfast causing sectarian riots (Belfast boldly Sunday)
The treaty was still signed on July 11, 1921
An Irish republic was rejected and a 32 county untied Ireland was rejected
The Irish got a 26 county Irish free state which would become a dominion of the British like Canada and Australia
The king will still be the head of state and the British will have control over three strategic ports within the free states
The treaty also allowed Northern Ireland to opt-out of the free state
The treaty caused the Irish civil war because one side wanted a better deal and one side knew they weren't going to get anything better than what they got.
The Irish had county's that are able to vote on how they wanted the government to look like and the French had department that acted like county's
