Act 1

  • Giles wanders into the Parris House to figure out what is going on. He tells Reverend Hale that he believes it weird for his wife to read all the time.

  • In the beginning of the play Giles Corey is a foolish old man who's not very smart yet he's very courageous. However towards the end of the play he sacrifices himself for his family's well-being and honor. "I will not give you no name. Martha belives that she is innocent of witch craft as when she says in Act III "I am innocent to a witch. I know not what a witch is". This implies that she thinks that she has done no harm and that she doesn't even know what a witch is.

  • Martha Corey is neither heroic or villainous, nor sacrificial or selfish. She is just innocent, the only reason her husband accused her was because she read a book and Giles believed a woman reading was unnatural, for that she was put to death. "I am innocent to a witch." (Miller 1953)
