Reading Map:

Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell

By: Ahyun Kim

Approach:

Charles Dickens

Approach: Charles Dickens

Approach:

Before this class, I did not have many experiences reading books or short stories in English. So reading books that were written in English was not easy.

The reading practices that I used to understand better:

  • Circling words that I don't know
  • Highlighting
  • Margin notes

My Reading

I circled the words that I don't know the meanings and I wrote their meaning in the margin.

Also, I highlighted where I thought it is a important part and wrote a marginal note about it. That helped me when I was writing my mid-term paper.

Difficulties and Breakthrough

World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted

Difficulties and Breakthroughs

Difficulties:

Reading literary works that are written in English was not easy for me because I did not have many experiences reading them before.

Breakthroughs:

I read the same parts several times to understand fully and get to know what is going on in the story. Also, If I did not know the definition of words, I look them up in the dictionary.

Approach:

Elizabeth Gaskell

Approach: Elizabeth Gaskell

Approach:

It was difficult to read and understand Elizabeth Gaskell's stories.

The reading practices that I used to understand better:

  • Circling words that I don't know
  • Margin notes

My Reading

I circled the words that I don't know and wrote their definitions in the margin and also wrote some information that I have to know while reading this such as the small numbers next to the words. I also included questions if I had any.

Difficulties and Breakthroughs

World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted

Difficulties and Breakthroughs

Difficulties:

Reading her works was particularly difficult for me. There were many words that I don’t know and understanding overall was not easy at all.

Breakthroughs:

To understand what is going on, I had to read a couple of times not just once. I read the story first and then I looked up the definitions of words that I did not know, wrote them down and I went back to reading the same parts again.
