Let's find out
Many plants die after they make new seeds. So how do they continue to grow?
Some of the plant's seeds fall to the ground near the base of the "parent plant", but often, there is not enough room for a new plant to grow.
So what will happen to my seeds?
Seeds can continue the life cycle if they have space to grow. What this means is, that most seeds need to travel in order to survive. How do you think they travel? A bus? Or perhaps an airplane? Write your hypothesis down on a piece of paper.
Wind, water, birds, animals AND people help seeds travel. Wind can carry seeds far far away. Some seeds fall into streams, ponds, rivers, or oceans, and are then carried to different areas.
Other seeds travel by attaching themselves to people's clothes and animal fur. Birds can drop seeds. Animals, like squirrels, can bury seeds or nuts to eat them later in the winter. Sometimes they forget where they left some of these seeds, and they end up sprouting into new plants in the spring!
To do this, you will need:
- a pair of large wooly socks
- tweezers
- a magnifying glass
1. Put the socks on over your shoes
2. Walk around in your backyard or
local park. Somewhere grassy. As
you walk, try and brush against
plants such as dandelions so the
seeds really stick to the socks.
3. Go back inside and remove any
seeds on your socks with tweezers.
4. Examine the seeds with your
magnifying glass.
How many different kinds of seeds did you get?
Can you guess which seeds came from which plants?
What do you think helped these seeds travel?

While lots of seeds move naturally through nature, a lot of seeds are also purposely planted. Most of, if not all, the food we eat comes from farms, where fruit and vegetable seeds were bought, or harvested, for farmers to plant and grow on their land.
Just like we did with our bean plants and potato plant!
Just like the bean seeds we planted, seeds are typically planted in soil, where they then need sunlight and water to grow. Some are planted in pots, others in the ground. Let's take a look at how Peep plants a seed...
