Railroads

Time Zones

They are separate areas that observe a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. Since different parts of the planet enter and exit daylight at different times, these time zones are required for an accurate reading of the day and night.

Airbrakes

Railroad airbrakes are a power brake system that uses compressed air. That air pushes on a piston in a cylinder, that piston is connected by mechanical linkage to the brake shoes that then rub on the wheels, creating friction and slowing down trains. This allowed for trains to travel at higher speeds and safer braking.

Transcontinental Railroad

Title

A railroad which connected the two American coasts that made the import and export of resources between the two coast significantly easier. It also benefitted expansion of the West.

Communications

Communications

Telegraph

The telegraph was a form of communication used by making a breaking an electrical connection. For the first time in human history, it allowed for near instant long-distance communication.

Telephone

The first telephone consisted of two parts: a transmitter and reciever. It allowed for the transmission of the human voice.

Electricity

Phonograph

An instrument designed for reproducing sounds by means of vibration. Allowed for people to listen to music whenever, wherever, and however long they wanted to.

Lightbulb

A device used to convert electricity into light. Helped establish social order after sundown, extended workdays and allows safer travel and navigation in the dark.

Alternating Current

An electric current that reverses its direction many times a second at regular intervals, typically used in power supplies. It's cheaper to generate and prodeuces fewer anergy losses.

Alternating Current

Kodak Camera

The first successful roll-film hand-held camera, launched in the summer of 1888.

Steel Manufacturing

The bessemer process was the first inexpensive industrial process for the mass production of steel. This changed the industry entirely and allowed for much more efficiency. It reduces molten pig iron in so-called bessemer converters.
