The Bath

Mood

  • Sadness- the author states that the journey to the graveyard gets more physically and mentally difficult each year.
  • Disgust- through out the story she is "fed up" or disgusted with her condition and her weakness, the author continuously highlights her vulnerability throughout the story which she is seems to be fed up with.
  • Loneliness- the old lady is all alone, no one to look after her. she believes she would be better off dead than in constant pain she also feels as though she wont be missed.
  • Sorrow- The author shows her depression and ill-feelings towards life along with her bitterness and her lack of purpose or reason for life.
  • Caution/Cautious- the old lady is cautious because of her fragile condition.
  • Calmness and comfort- Although most of the story is in negative mood she feels at peace when she sits on the grass next to her husbands grave.
  • Shock/Distress- During the time she failed to get out of the bath the mood was shock distress and fear.
  • Fear- Although she wanted to die and thought death was better than living in her condition she was afraid of death because she had the human instinct to survive and the fear of dying.

Tone

  • Melancholy- the tones of the author are negative one of them is melancholy or a state of depression. The feelings are often to do with her mourning for her husband and her general loneliness and throughout the story
  • Bitterness- There is bitterness that is quite evident through her perspective on life and her attitude towards death. The author brings this out many times throughout the story.
  • Resentful- She resents her current situation and her weak or fragile condition, the resentful tone helps bring out the theme of mortality.
  • Fearful- She was fearful and nervous while getting into the bath and was cautious of doing chores. she was also hesitant and had to force herself to make the journey to the graveyard because of the dangers.
  • Nervous- the old lady has feelings of uncertainty and nervousness while doing small things it could be said to be some paranoia.

Atmosphere- the feeling created by the mood, tone and setting

the author creates atmosphere by creating a mood establishing tone and describing the author or setting.

Atmosphere

  • Reflective-The story starts with a reflective atmosphere where she thinks about visiting her husbands grave and the air is filled with nostalgia.
  • Gloomy/Dark- the atmosphere turns gloomy and dark when she is on her way to the bath tub
  • Calm- There is a hint of calmness or peace in the atmosphere when she is in the graveyard close to her family
  • Tense- The atmosphere changes to a tense one when she is unable to leave the bath tub and the mood changes to a fearful one, because of her close encounter to death
