Ancient Greek Technology

Ancient Greek

Our topic is Ancient Greek Technology and we have selected and researched the inventions of Greece. The inventions we have picked are Mathematics, Weapons, Astronomy, and The Olympic games.

Introduction

Mathematics:

Mathematics

The oldest clay tablets with mathematics were made over 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. Pythagoras studied triangles and eventually led to him making the Pythagorean Theorem that we know today.

Math examples you would probably see in ancient Greece

Examples of what it would look like

How it could've been used in daily life

They could've used these symbols to indicate numbers and used this so solve equations

Examples of what it would look like

How would weapons be used in daily life

Spears and swords

Weapons

Weapons

Some of the weapons Ancient Greece created were the sword, shield, spear, armor, phalanx, ballista, and warships.

Warships

Phalanx

Ballista

Spears and swords

Most swords and spears were 6 to 8 feet long. Most swords were double edged. Spears were made out of sharp iron head, a wooden shaft, and a bronze bottom. The swords were considered a secondary weapon. They were to be used once the spear was thrown or after the spear broke.

Shields and armor

Shields and Armor

Armor was used to protect the soldier from spears, arrows, and other weapons of the enemy. The armor weighed 60 to 65 pounds. Shields were used to smash spears of the enemy and protect the soldier from attacks from the enemy. Helmets were also worn to protect the soldiers head while in battle.

Phalanx

Consisted of tight formation of soldiers armed with spears and concave shields. Phalanx protected the soldiers from arrows and attacks from the enemy.

Ballista

A ballista was a type of crossbow. A ballista was one of the most powerful weapons of Ancient Greece. It could fire many long range shots at the same time.

Warships

Warships once were called pentekontors. Warships were narrow ships designed to go fast to overtake other ships and attack them.

How would weapons be used in daily life

Weapons would be used in daily life by helping the Greeks win battles. The weapons would also protect the Greek soldiers while fighting. Also more weapons would have to be made after battles. So some people could make weapons for a job. The soldiers would also have to practice for the next battle and get better at fighting so they would win the battle.

Astronomy

Astronomy

Astronomy is a type of science that deals with space, planets, and the whole universe. Aristarchus of Samos and Thales of Meilets were two of the best astronomer's out there in their time. But, even thought he was a philosopher, Anaxagoras made some good discoveries too.

Aristarchus

Aristarchus is the man who first hinted to the the Earth revolving around the sun. As well as being an astronomer, he was a mathematician.

Thales

Thales could predict when the solar eclipse would happen. Even if the method he used is unaccounted for, many have tried but all have failed to recreate the method he used.

Anaxagoras

Anaxagoras

As I said before he was a philosopher. But, he was the person who discovered that the moon, reflects the sun's rays. He also was the one who found out what the true cause of the eclipse was.

How Astronomy Was Used

How Astronomy was used in everyday life

The astronomy they used wasn't used in the everyday life, but, it did lead to a lot of developments that we use today. The people who used it the most were probably sailor, they used stars, not maps.

The Olympic Games

The Olympic Games

The Olympic Games started almost 3000 years ago. Zeus was in the olympics the winners became famous. some times they got big sums of money the first olympic game was called the Stadion.
