Beowulf is the son of "a noble warrior-lord named Ecgtheow"(263). Please see image 2.
Beowulf "ordered a boat that would ply the waves" (198-199). He sailed across the sea to help an old friend. Beowulf shows his loyalty to Hrothgar when he first shows up and Hrothgar explains why Beowulf showed up saying, "[Beowulf is] here to follow up an old friendship" (376). Please see images 3 and 4.
When Hygelac dies "Hygd offers him throne and athority..." telling Beowulf that "she had no faith in her son's ability" (2369/2371). Beowulf declines the offer of the throne and instead decides to "provide support for the prince..." (2377) until Heardred died and Beowulf is offically declared king. Please look at images 5, 6, and 7.
Wiglaf, "a son of Weohstan" (2602), showed loyalty to Beowulf and in return Beowulf was loyal to Wiglaf. Please see image 8.
When Beowulf is fighting the dragon alone Wiglaf tells a story of his father, saying, "When [Weohstan] saw his lord tormented by the heat of his scalding helmet, he remembered the gifts bestowed on him" (2574-2576). Wiglaf remebers his father helping his lord in a time of need and this is a time that their lord needs help so he's gonna go help. Please see images 9 and 10.
In his next speech Wiglaf tells them that they too should help their lord saying that he remembers how "we pledged loyalty to our lord in the hall..." (2634). He tells them that "this lord we serve needs sound men to give him their support" (2647-2648). Because of they had given their lord their loyalty they should go out and fight, however, they don't, and therefore betray Beowulf. Wiglaf is the only one who goes and helps and honors his loyalty and is therefore rewarded for it. Please see images 11 and 12.
Because Wiglaf was the only one brave enough to fight with Beowulf, Beowulf rewards him. Beowulf tells Wiglaf "I have bartered my last breath to own this fortune, it is up to you to look after their needs" (2799-2801). With these few words in his last moments alive Beowulf basically gives everything to Wiglaf. Please see image 13.
Beowulf used his last moments and "unclasped the collar of gold from around his neck and gave it to the young thane" (2809-2811). He gave Wiglaf his necklace and named Wiglaf lord.
The warriors were both loyal and not loyal througout the novel including at the battle against Grendal, the battle against Grendals mother, and the battle against the dragon.
In the battle against Grendal everybody wanted to help and everyone wanted to fight. They "roamed forth, hunting for prey in the high hall" (712-713). The warriors weren't just willing to fight they were searching for Grendal so they could fight him. "Beowulf's warriors worked to defend their lord's life" (793-794). They risked their lives to protect Beowulf. Please see images 14 and 15.
In the battle against Grendals mother all of the warriors waited by the water for Beowulf to return. The only point that they left was when they "saw a heave-up and surge of waves and blood in the back wash" (1593-1594). The only reason they left was because they thought Beowulf was dead. They even said that it was "clear to many that the wolf of the deep had destroyed him forever" (1598-1599). Please see images 16 and 17.
In the battle against the dragon Wiglaf was the only one who saw that "this lord we serve needs sound men to give him their support" (2648-2649). As a result of Beowulf having no help, "he had no more to confide" (2818). However, because Wiglaf helped him defeat the dragon Beowulf named him king. Please see images 18, 19, and 20.
