DIXIE

What is Dixie / Dixieland ?

  • Nickname for the Southern United States
  • Referring to parts of the United States that feel southern
  • Term got popular through the anthem „(I wish I was in Dixie“).

There are two theories where the name originates from.

1.

  • In the French Quarter of New Orleans and other banks in Louisiana the Citizens State Bank issued the currency first

-> 10-Dollar-Notes were called Dixies

2.

  • Dixie is derived from Jeremiah Dixon, a surveyor of the Mason–Dixon line. It defined the border between Maryland and Pennsylvania.

-> The southern part was called Dixieland

Dixie Song

  • During the American Civil War, it was adopted as a unofficial national anthem of the Confederate States of America.

  • Was a favorite of President Abraham Lincoln

The flag

  • Battle flag
  • To many white Southerners, the flag is an emblem of regional heritage and pride
  • But to others, it has a starkly different meaning — representing racism, slavery and the country’s long history of oppression of African Americans
