What is Dixie / Dixieland ?
- Nickname for the Southern United States
- Referring to parts of the United States that feel southern
- Term got popular through the anthem „(I wish I was in Dixie“).
There are two theories where the name originates from.
1.
- In the French Quarter of New Orleans and other banks in Louisiana the Citizens State Bank issued the currency first
-> 10-Dollar-Notes were called Dixies
2.
- Dixie is derived from Jeremiah Dixon, a surveyor of the Mason–Dixon line. It defined the border between Maryland and Pennsylvania.
-> The southern part was called Dixieland
Dixie Song
- During the American Civil War, it was adopted as a unofficial national anthem of the Confederate States of America.
- Was a favorite of President Abraham Lincoln
