The origin of Rome and the Republic

Introduction

Hello. My name is Sebastian Steip. You will see that the background picture is of a famous Roman road called the Appian way. It was along this road that apostle Paul traveled on his journey to Rome. Romans built roads all over the ancient world and it could literally be said of the ancient world that "all roads lead to Rome." In a figurative sense the road of ancient history also leads to Rome. Rome was the culmination of ancient civilization. In this Presentation I will be discussing the beginnings of ancient Rome and their republic.

Origin of Rome

Origin

The earliest inhabitants of the Italian peninsula had come from across the Alps and had settled in northern Italy. Many of these early settlers-called Latins-moved south and settled in Latium, a plain lying south of the Tiber River near the western coast of Italy.

The beginning of Rome according to legend

Origin according to legend

Like the Greeks, the Romans developed legends to explain their early history. According to Roman tradition, Rome was founded in 753 B.C. by the twin brothers Romulus and Remus. The legend tells how a relative of Romulus and Remus usurped the throne and ordered two babes, who were of royal descent, to be drowned. These infants were placed in a basket and thrown into the Tiber river to die. A wolf found and saved them and fed them its milk until a shepherd took them in. As young men Romulus and Remus allegedly returned to find a city near the place where the wolf had discovered them. Romulus founded the city of Rome, named it after himself and became its first king.

Structure of Roman society and government

Structure of Roman society.

The early government of Rome was a monarchy. The king served as the chief priest, the commander of the army, and the administrator of justice. The kings authority was called the imperium. A small bundle of rods which enclosed an ax, called the fasces, symbolized his power.

Patriarchs

The wealthy landowners and noble families made up the aristocratic class called the patricians.

Plebians

The majority of the Romans were plebians. These were the common people(the farmers, traders and craftsman) that supposedly belonged to an inferior class according to the wealthy citizens.

The Roman Republic

Republic

About a century after the founding of Rome, the Etruscans crossed the Tiber river from the north and conquered Latin villages. During the period of Etruscan rule, Rome grew from a weak league of villages to become the leading Latin city. The Etruscans hated the power that Rome had aquired and overthrew them. In the place of the monarchy, they established a new form of government called a republic.

Branches of the roman republic.

Branches of the republic.

  • The consuls(government officials) replaced the king, carried out laws and commanded the army.
  • The Senate was an aristocratic body that was composed of about 300 members and held most of the power in the early roman republic.
  • The republic had assemblies were the people could express their views. Wealth, birth and the place of ones residence determined the membership and voting procedures of these various assemblies.

Conclusion

Rome was one the greatest civilizations of the ancient world. Its system of government inspired our founding fathers to make the great nation of the United States of America. In this presentation I talked about how Rome came about and how their system of government worked. I hope you have all learned something about some of the most interesting aspects of ancient Rome. Thank you.
