Disability

-Michael J. Fox has Parkinson's disease.

- diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991 at age 29

-causes uncontrollable shaking tremors, slowed movements, balance difficulties, troubles standing up and stiffness in the limbs.

Disability

- a progressive disorder that effects the nervous system

- affects parts of the body controlled by nerves

Misconceptions

Misconceptions:

-Many believe that Parkinson's only effects motor ability such as walking, moving, etc.

- can have effects on later life; such as dementia, anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep problems and more.

-not all people get tremors

-People believe there is nothing that can be done to help Parkinson's

--> recent study found that staying active and doing hour long exercises throughout

the week were able to function better; do daily tasks much easier.

Accommodations

- Michael can get speech amplifiers or mobility devices such as canes/wheel chairs

-Michael has gotten a brain surgery (on the thalamus) to relieve his tremors

-Michael also takes a drug called Sinement

Why did I choose Michael J. Fox?

-I chose Michael J.Fox because I was a huge fan of his Back To the Future movies.

-For this project, I though that choosing Fox would be the perfect opportunity to learn more in depth about his life and disease.

-When I first heard about Michael's diagnosis, I was curious to what Parkinson's disease was.
