EPQ Presentation

Ben Graham

Introduction

  • Wanted to improve my ability to write long detailed dissertaion

  • Chemistry or Biology related

  • Wanted something that I could go into enough detail with

Outline of the topic

  • How does the Ebola virus enter and affect host cells?

  • Understanding of the virus is important in the development of a vaccine or cure.

  • Key parts of the Project;
  • Structure
  • Mechanism of Entry
  • Effects on host cells

Research

  • No primary research used, all secondary research

  • A range of sources;
  • Journals
  • Clinical Trial Reports
  • Books
  • Handbooks

  • Lots of research has been overrided by more recent studies

Analysis of findings from research

  • Early research caused me to change topic slightly.

  • Realised that I did not understand a lot of the research.

Development

  • Did most research first so I could just type.

  • As I went through I realised that there was parts I wanted to expand on or had not looked into.

  • Colour coded plan

  • Source document

Conclusions

  • The virus itself has developed its structure to be simplistic yet carry out a variety of functions during the initial entry

  • The main mechanism of entry is macropinocytosis, where the virus is enveloped by the host cell and transported inside.

  • With the current progress an FDA approved vaccine might be available for full scale commercial use within the next few years.

Conclusions

Evaluation

  • Enjoyed it

  • Improved many skills;
  • Referencing
  • Time managment
  • Planning

  • Had never written in this style before

Strengths of the project

  • Good time managment and plan

  • Research was done mostly in advance allowing me to fully understand and plan what I wanted to write.

Strengths of the project

Weaknesses of the project

  • Referencing

  • Writing style

  • Lack of understanding at the start

Weaknesses of the project
