Memory verse: “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to
death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit.” (1 Peter 3:18)
In the old testament, there was a special day called the Day of Atonement. (Lev 16:29)
In that day, the high priest should offer sacrifices to God to make atonement for his people's sins.
1. Make sure the lamb is without blemish
2. Laying hands on the lamb
3. Behead the lamb, strip off it's skin, wash it's inner parts.
4. The lamb will be carried outside the camp, it's skin, flesh and offal will be burned in fire.
Bring the lamb's blood inside the veil to make atonement for the people.
The uncleanness of the children of Israel were cleansed and their sins were atoned. (Lev 16)
However, the chosen people need to observe the day of atonement every year.
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.(Heb 10:4)
Jesus was crucified for the sake of us, His Crucifixion is a sin offering for all the humankind.
"...And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself." (John 12:32)
1. Through the trials, Jesus has been tested. However, no one could find any evil from Him. (The lamb is without blemish)
2. The crown of thorns = laying hands on Jesus head. (thorns represent the sins of human.)
3. The sufferings of Jesus = how the lamb was beheaded, how it's skin was stripped......
4. The crucifixion of Jesus = burning the lamb
Jesus is the high priest (Heb 5:6)
Jesus offered his own blood for making atonement for His people. (Heb 10:6-7)
Jesus is the word becoming flesh, He prepared his body for the sin offering.
Jesus offered his own blood for the eternal redemption (Heb 9:12)
There is no need to keep observing the day of atonement.
We need to live for Jesus after being baptized into His name.
But, How?
1. Pursue a Holy Life
- say no to bad habits & evil deeds
2. Deny ourselves for the sake of Jesus
- obey the teaching of bible rather than follow our own will.
4. Be willing to offer ourselves to serve the Lord.
- offer our time, energy, talent to Jesus
Jesus keeps interceding for us
- Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.(Rom 8:34)
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of(Heb 4:16)
