Nationalist Sentiments

  • Idi Amin assumed control of Uganda on January 25th, 1971
  • Most of his ideas were due to his paranoia
  • Told civilians exactly what he wanted to hear
  • Targeted anyone who disagreed with his regime, and the cultural group they belonged to
  • Amin believed that the Ugandan civillians were corrupt
  • Did everything in his power to make Uganda succeed as a country

  • True personality was shown as he grew stronger
  • Tortured and terrorized opposition to keep power
  • Had civilian spies to track down the opposition
  • Used the country's wealth to strengthen the military

Amin had several ways of torturing and killing people. These methods include:

  • Brutal beatings/bludgeoned
  • Decapitation
  • Shootings
  • Being set ablaze
  • Fed to animals such as crocodiles
  • Whipping
  • Dismemberment
  • Cannibalism (though this was usually after the victims had died)

Evidence of Ultranationalism

  • Turned an armory into a torture chamber
  • Tortured and/or killed anyone who opposed him
  • Fond of Adolf Hitler and his views
  • Didn't hesitate to declare how Hitler was "right"
  • He targeted and killed the only Jew in the area
  • Couldn't stand anyone that didn't fit his definition of a "strong citizen"

  • Idi Amin joins the King's African Rifles (KAR), also known as Britain's colonial African Troops.

1971 - 1972

  • Jan 25th, 1971 - Idi Amin assumes power of Uganda while Obote is in Singapore.

  • Aug 27th, 1972 - Amin deports 50,000 Asians and takes all their belongings.

  • Sept 14th, 1972 - The USA withholds a $3 million dollar loan to Uganda after Amin praises Hitler.

  • Sept 17th 1972 - Amin bombs Tanzanian towns after troops attempted to attack Uganda.

  • Jul 11th, 1973 - Peace Corps were deported by Amin.

  • Mar, 24th 1973 - Amin stops an attempted coup.

  • Jul 28th, 1975 - Amin is elected Chairman of the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

  • Feb 7th, 1977 - Amin is accused of executing thousands of Ugandans by Amnesty International.

  • Feb 25th, 1977 - Amin holds 240 American citizens hostage.

  • Mar 1st, 1977 - Amin releases the American hostages.

  • June 18th, 1977 - Amin is in hiding after being wounded by an apparent assassination attempt.

  • Early 1978 - Amin comes out of hiding,
  • Oct, 1978 - Amin attempts to annex Northern Tanzania, but is met with force and Uganda's capital is taken over.
  • Mar 29th, 1979 - Amin flees to the West Nile Province after Uganda crumbles.
  • Apr 13th 1979 - Amin is seeking exile in Saudi Arabia after being deposed as President.

  • Declared economic war on Ugandan Asians
  • Gave Asians 3 months to leave the country or they would be killed

  • Willingly targeted several ethnic groups
  • Took over abandoned businesses
  • Expelled Israeli military officers
  • Slaughtered all who opposed him

International Response

International Response

  • The press initially held positive views towards Amin
  • He was elected as Chair of Organization of African Unity (OAU)
  • The United Nations tried to condemn him for crimes against humanity
  • The OAU blocked the United Nations' proposal
  • As support for Amin began to decline, an international boycott took place
  • Inflation occurred across Uganda reaching over 1000%
  • Amin attempted to annex Kagara, a northern province of Tanzania
  • Julius Nyerere responded by sending troops into Uganda and taking over the capital
  • Amin fled the country and died of organ failure years later in 2003
