What is AI?

AI or artificial intelligence is the term used to describe the intelligence of machines or software. It can also be defined as the branch of computer science that builds smart machines with the capability of performing tasks that usually require human intelligence.

The use of Artifical Intelligence is happening all around us. For example, many streaming platforms use AI to make content recommendations. AI is also being used to:

  • Develop new drugs and treatments in healthcare
  • Detect fraudulent charges
  • Autinate tasks in manufacturing
  • Develop self-driving cars in transportation
  • Personal assistants such as Siri or Alexa

How can the use of AI be managed?

With the new addition of AI tools, there are concerns to students using AI to do the work for them. Here are some tips to managing AI use:

  • Imbrace AI technology within the classroom
  • Create a system to let students know when it is and isn't appropriate to use AI.
  • Change policies to include guidelines for the use of AI

Green, Yellow, Red Strategy

The green, yellow, red strategy is a tool that can be used to help students understand your expectations of the use of AI.

Red: The use of AI technology is not permited on this assignment.

Yellow: Students are required to get permission from the teacher before using AI technology on this assignment.

Green: Students are encouraged AI technology for their work but must see the teacher first to determine how the tool will be used and how the student will indicate the use of AI in their work.
