Setting

The story takes place in the two fictional countries of Zantoroland and Freedom State.

Setting

Zantoroland

Zantoroland

A small island had been previously colonized by many nations the latest being Freedom State. The country's last prime minister was killed by the head of the military, Randall Jenkins, who declared himself the President for Life of the country. Due to the practices of the current government, the country is suffering from poverty and racism. Many of the citizens try to flee the country to save themselves from the government.

Time: The beginning of the novel around the years of 2004 and 2018.

Freedom State

Freedom State

A wealthy nation who was the last country colonize Zantoroland. The country also brought over a lot of the slaves from Zantoroland but deported them as soon as slavery was abolished. The country also elected an anti-immigrant government.

Time: The novel in is this country during the start of the novel, the middle, and the end of the novel in 2019 where Keita lives there as a citizen with his sister and girlfriend.

Atmosphere

The Atmosphere

Start of the novel: The atmosphere at the start of the novel is tragic as it shows the hardships and the death Ketia has had to deal with due to the government of his home country.

Middle of the Novel: The atmosphere of the novel was tense due to the buildup of tension

Conflict: The atmosphere was tense due to the events which took place inside of Rocco's office

End of the novel: The atmosphere was joyous at the end of the novel as all the conflicts were solved.

Plot

Chapters 1-4

  • Introduced to Ketia Ali, the main character of the novel. Ketia is a gifted runner and the son of well-known journalist Yoyo Ali.
  • Due to his father's works Ketia and his family are targeted by the government.
  • His older sister leaves the country and his dad is killed by the government, Ketia leaves with Anton Ham to Freedom State.

Chapter 5-10

  • Viola Hill a black reporter in Freedom State who witnesses a bunch of refugees being mistreated by the police. She later sent to cover a story about award-winning essays written by youth, where she meets John Falconer, a gifted 15 year-old who is going to make documentary on Africtown .
  • Ivernia Beech,a retired woman who is being targeted by the Office of Independent Living due to her deadbeat son

Plot

Chapters 11-19

Ketia wins one the biggest races in Freedom State and reveals his identity. During the race we are introduced to Candace, the first black female officer in Freedom State.

At this point, Hamm is offered a deal for money report his illegal runners for money. Ketia signs up for a library card to be able contact the Zantoroland officials who his sister. Ketia is threatened by Hamm to give him money or he will be killed. Ketia is offered to be on the national team for the country. Ketia faints and has to be taken to the hospital.

Chapter 20-30

  • Ketia ran another race placed in second met Candace and went on a date with her.
  • Ketia meets Viola on a run and she saves him from Hamm
  • Rocco goes to Bombay Booty after being forced to by his superiors where he is told about everything with PM and recording

Plot

Chapters 31-36

  • Rocco suspects that the PM is going to frame him to cover up his own mistake.
  • John and Rocco plan to met Ketia for the USB and give him refugee status
  • Ketia trys to win the marathon one last time to save his sister.
  • The PM and Lula meet up and talk about the USB and Ketia

Chapters 36-42

  • Viola goes Zantoroland to find Yoyo's works but ends up getting kidnapped by the government.
  • There is a confrontation in Rocco's office
  • The PM and his sectary get arrested and imprisoned
  • everyone lives happily every after.

Theme

The author wants us to address issues dealing political corruption, immigrant polices and race. The events in the book are real life issues that many people try to ignore but we have to address.
