People of the War

The Union

  • Abraham Lincoln- was the 16th President of the US. He led the Union during the CW and issued the Emancipation Proclamation 1863, setting free the slaves in the Confederacy. He was killed at Ford's Theatre by assassin John Wilkes Booth.
  • Ulysses S. Grant- was General of the Union Army during the CW. Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9, 1865 at appomatox Courthouse, VA. He became 18th President in 1868.
  • William Carney- enlisted in the all African-American 54th Massachusetts regiment during the CW. He was the 1st African-American to win the Congressional Medal of Honor.
  • Philip Bazar- was a Hispanic-American sailor who won the Medal of Honor for Bravery.

The Confederacy

  • Jefferson Davis-President of the Confederate states. In his inaugural address, he argued the succession was a "necessity, not a choice."
  • Robert E Lee- was the Commander of the Confederate Army. His surrender to U.S. Grant ended the Civil War.
  • Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson- Confederate General who was best known for his courage facing an opposing army like a "stonewall" without backing down. He was loved in the South for his acts of bravery and valor.

Important Women of the CW

  • Julia Ward Howe- abolitionist, social activist, poet, author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic"
  • Clara Barton- was a nurse in the Union Army at Antietam and many other battles. She Founded the American Red Cross after the War.

  • Mary Edwards Walker- physician who served in the Union. ** The only woman to ever receive the Medal of Honor.
  • Dorothea Dix- organized large number of women to serve as Union nurses.
  • (CSA) Sally Tompkins- established a hospital for COnfederate soldiers in Richmond, VA.
  • (CSA)- Loretta Janetta Valezques- disguised herself as a man and fought for the CSA at Bull Run and Shiloh. Later became a spy for the South.
