Kobe Bryant

The Mamba Mentality

Kobe Bryant

01

Kobe Bryant is a professional basketball player that played for the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA.

His father Joe Bryant played in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers. Kobe is known as one of the top 5 best basketball players to ever play the game.

My Enjoyment

02

The book was very interesting. Kobe dwelled on his mentality going into and out of games, his routines, his match-ups and how he used his time. I learned a lot reading this book, I'd give it a 9/10.

Kobe's Obstacles

03

Towards the end of Kobe's career he was suffering from a build up of injuries, he tore his achilles, broken and dislocated his fingers multiple times, fractured his knee multiple times, and had countless surgeries.

How he overcame these obstacles

04

He explained that he did not care if there was pain, he said the pain is bearable, he just didn't want the injury to get worse. If only the pain got worse then he'd fight through the pain.

Focus

05

Kobe was known for his "Mamba Mentality", to summarize what it is he mentioned it was a "No lose" zone, where the only possible outcome for him is winning, and he will do whatever it takes to do just that.

Time management

06

Kobe mentioned that in order to be successful you have too balance your life with your family and what is going to make you successful, and in order to do that you have to make sacrifices. Kobe sacrificed his sleep to be successful, going to the gym early before his wife and kids wake up and going to the gym late after his wife and kids are already in bed.

Pre-Performance Routines

07

Kobe wrote that his pre-performance routines varied on how his body was feeling a given day, if he was tired, he'd nap, if he felt that he needed to shoot more, he'd shoot more and so on. It also varied on who he was going up against and how the game would be played out.

Visualization

08

Kobe always had to visualize the game before it happened. He would watch tape before games and after games to get an idea on what would happen, he'd then run plays in his head leading up to game time.

Confidence

09

To be as great as Kobe you need to have the confidence that he had, the confidence to take those crazy circus shots in the middle of a game. Kobe mentioned that he practiced making these crazy shots until they weren't crazy for him anymore.

Distraction Control

10

Kobe told press that he would enter the stadium hours before games just to soak in the silence, he kept the silence with him until game time. When he came out of the locker room the noise wouldn't affect him, he would always remember the silence from before.

Question 1

11

I do believe that Kobe was clearly successful, and it shows. He won countless championships, MVP's and gold medals, He's regarded as one of the best to ever play the game, a real great

Question 2

12

From what I read from the book, Kobe explained that his life was basketball, his mind was only focused on basketball, he mentioned being great, and winning a championship is the greatest joy in life. He clearly had fun.

Question 3

13

I learned a lot from reading this book, as a basketball player myself I took into consideration a lot of the strategies that Kobe used, such as watching film, tips on fixing my jump shot and ways to separate myself from my opponent to give myself a chance to score.
