Definition of "plastic free"

Definition

The term “plastic free” applies to an item and its packaging, meaning the overall or cumulative product that is being sold to the end consumer. Hence, both content and sales packaging have to be free of plastics. (Flustix)

  • On average in the EU, 31kg of plastic packaging waste is produced per person per year.
  • Currently, in Europe, only 30% of plastic waste is collected for recycling
  • Americans go through 100 billion plastic shopping bags every year
  • The European parliament has voted to ban single-use plastic cutlery, cotton buds, straws and stirrers
  • 300 million tons of plastic
  • Plastic Product Ban : is a regulation on the consumption of single-use plastic items in stores and restaurants.
  • By 2030, all plastics packaging placed on the EU market is either reusable or can be recycled in a cost-effective manner.
  • Waste Management, recycling, EPR legislation
  • Polystyrene legislation
  • Straw-upon request legislation
  • Plastic bag ban and fee legislation
  • Comprehensive single use plastic bans
  • Miscellanous Plastic legislation
  • Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) + economic incentives
  • 2016 and 2018, the ASEAN region saw plastic waste imports 2 200 000 tonnes
  • Countries have taken measures to counter the growing tide of imports
  • Greenpeace Southeast Asia called for a ban on single-use plastics
  • Greenpeace recommends a three-point strategy for ASEAN member states to adopt as they urgently work towards a ‘Single-use Plastic-Free World’:

1) Declare an immediate ban on all imports of plastic waste

2) Establish a holistic regional policy geared toward massively reducing the production of single-use plastic packaging and products

3) Advance a sustainable and ethical circular economy framework, grounded on zero waste approaches, that protects human health and the environment

GRAPHS

We expected to find, during the interviews, more people categorized as “medium environmentally friendly”, according to the observations we did. This discrepancy can be link to a social factor: they tend to think that the environment is important because other people say it is right and not because they believe in it.

CONCLUSION

Final Conclusion

Principal Idea

Main issues

Two distinct behaviors

  • Economic problem; higher costs of non-plastic products
  • People interested to the reduction of the plastic in an active way

FINAL CONCLUSION

  • Understand if the bar’s owners are interested in reducing the usage of plastic
  • Socio-cultural problem; lack of knowledge and carelessness
  • People who think that it’s an important issue but are still waiting for others to find solutions

Observations

1. The ones that are already doing something commit themselves to find some easy and as sustainable as possible solutions that everybody can emulate.

2. One of the bar analyzed is already part of the Milan’s plastic free group

OBSERVATIONS

3. Results may be seen only in future / NoLo is a small reality = easier

4. Important to make people conscious about the plastic issue / Make them used to new sustainable daily habits
