Theodore Roosevelt expanded his “Big Stick” diplomacy known as the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine.

The United States had declared the war over. Eventually the United States allowed the Filipinos a greater role in governing their own county

The Panama Canal was built by the U.S treaty with Panama. Which took 10 years to build. More than 40,000 labor workers, and cost almost $390 million and stretches 50 miles across the mountainous regions of Panama.

Spain and the United States agreed to a cease-fire

  • The Boxer Rebellion rose up to wipe out “foreign devils” and their christian converters.
  • The Boxer Rebellion surrounded foreign embassies in Beijing, and killed 200 foreigners
  • August, international force which included U.S. troops rejected the rebellion
  • Secretary of State and British leader worked together to convince the Europeans not to use the Boxer Rebellion as an excuse for to separate china.
  • As a result the United States continued to have access on China’s trade with goods.

The New York Journal printed a private letter written by The Spanish ambassador to the United States. The letter described President Mckinely as “weak and a bidder for the admiration of the crowd” Americans took it as an insult and erupted in fury.
